There are many benefits that come with insulating your garage door. • Step 1: Choose your insulation – When deciding what insulation is right for your home, there are several factors you should consider. First, you need to identify which category your garage falls under. If your garage door is unattached, then you only need to find an insulation with an R-value of 0-6. If your garage is attached to your home, then you’re going to want to invest in an insulation with an R-value of 7 to 9. Finally, if your garage door is heated and cooled then you should invest in an insulation with an R-value of 10-13.

• Step 2: Measure your garage door – To ensure you order the correct amount of insulation, measure your garage door twice. Once you are confident in your measurements, order the insulation that you chose in step 1. From this point on, the process is fairly simple.

• Step 3: Cut your insulation to size – Now that you have purchased your insulation, cut a piece of insulation for each panel of your garage door. When cutting your insulation, cut your section 1 to 2 inches longer than the panels of your garage door. 

• Step 4: Attach the sections of insulation to your garage door – To complete this next step, you’re going to need to tuck your cut pieces of insulation into each panel of your garage door. To do this, use double sided tape and retainer clips to hold the insulation in place. Make sure that the vinyl or reflective side of the insulation faces towards you when you attach them to your garage door panels.

• Step 5: Fasten the retention clips – Finally, fasten the retention clips that you used to attach the insulation in step 4. To do this, push the insulation flat against your garage door. You should feel the imprint of the retention clips on the other side of the section of insulation. When you find the retention clip, cut a half inch gash in the insulation and pull the retention clip through. Then, attach the front piece of the retention clip, effectively holding the insulation in place.
