How to install a garage door opener

January 10, 2023

Installing a garage door opener is considered a moderately challenging task, but with the right tools and know-how it is possible to do it yourself without hiring a professional. That being said, the job does require a few essential tools and it will take around 2-4 hours from start to completion. Again, the task is considered challenging to many. For these reasons you might consider hiring a professional.

If you do decide to complete the installation yourself, then please refer to this article to get a general idea of the installation process. This article should only be used as a supplementary guide—for more in depth directions please refer to the directions included with your specific model of garage door opener.

Step 1: Assemble and Mount the Carriage Tube

The carriage tube allows the carriage to travel from the power unit to the front wall of the garage. This enables the device to raise and lower the door. To assemble the carriage tube, follow the directions created by the manufacturer of your specific model. You will need to make sure that you seat the carriage tube pieces securely. You will finally need to verify that the assembled length matches the length required by the manufacturer. You can then make adjustments using a socket wrench (or other tool as directed) as necessary. Now you can mount the carriage tube. You will need to mount the carriage tube to the front of the power unit. To do this, attach the rail clamps to the carriage tube. These will later connect to a bracket on the wall above the door.

Step 2: Attach the Carriage over the Tube

Now you will mount the carriage onto the carriage tube. Again, you will need to follow the manufacturer’s directions to accomplish this step.

Step 3: Mount the Header Bracket

To mount the header bracket, you will need to lift the garage door to find the point of highest travel. Then, you will need to use a level so you can mark the wall above the door for this height. Then measure two inches above your first mark and make your second mark. Now, line up the bottom edge of the header bracket with this second mark, then attach to the wall with the fasteners. Then you will need to lift the unfastened end of the carriage tube and attach it to the header bracket. Once the carriage tube is attached to the header bracket, raise up the power unit and place it securely on top of a stepladder so that it is close to the ceiling.

Step 4: Hang the Power Unit from the Ceiling

Most units are designed to hang from angle iron and metal straps but other methods do exist. Be sure to explicitly follow the directions included with your specific model.

Step 5: Attach the Bracket for the Carriage Arm

The carriage has a metal arm that  connects it to a bracket mounted on the garage door. You will need to attach this carriage arm to the carriage body in accordance with the instructions included with your specific model.

Step 6: Plug in the Safety Device and ensure it works properly

Finally, install the safety device or sensor as indicated by the manufacturer. You should then thoroughly check the device to ensure it is functioning properly.
