Quick answerIf the garage door remote doesn't work but the wall button does, the problem is the remote, its battery, the lock (vacation) mode, or the opener's receiver — all quick fixes. If the wall button doesn't work either, the remote is fine and the problem is power, the sensors, or the opener itself. Start with that one test; it tells you which half of this guide to read.
Remote calls are the one repair we would rather talk you out of paying for. About half of the "remote is dead" calls we get are a battery or a lock button, and we would rather you spend five minutes than $85. Work through these in order.
First: does the wall button work?
Press the wall console inside the garage. If the door moves, everything from the motor down is fine and you are in the remote section below. If the door does not move from the wall button, skip to "When it's the opener, not the remote".
Seven remote fixes, in order
1. Battery
Most remotes use a CR2032 coin cell or a 3V/12V mini battery. A remote that works only when you are close to the door, or needs a couple of presses, is almost always a weak battery. Replace it even if it "looks fine" — they die gradually. Check the visor clip remote and the keypad separately; they each have their own battery.
2. Lock / vacation mode
Most wall consoles have a lock button. Press it once and every remote stops working while the wall button still works — it's designed for vacations and it gets bumped constantly. Hold the lock button for a few seconds until the console light stops blinking, then try the remote.
3. Re-pair the remote
Remotes lose their programming after a power outage or a surge. On the back or under the light cover of the opener is a "Learn" button (often purple, yellow, orange or red). Press it once, then within 30 seconds press the remote button. The opener light blinks to confirm. Every brand is slightly different — the model number on the opener plus "learn button" will get you the exact steps.
4. Range and interference
If the remote only works within a few feet, it may be interference rather than the remote. LED bulbs in the opener are the number one cause we find — cheap LED drivers broadcast noise right at the opener's frequency. Swap the bulb for an incandescent or an LED marked as garage-door-opener compatible. Nearby ham radio, a new Wi-Fi router, or a neighbor's new opener can do the same.
5. The keypad and car buttons
If the handheld remote works but the outdoor keypad doesn't, it needs its own battery and re-pairing. If your vehicle's built-in buttons stopped working after a new opener or a battery change, they must be re-trained to the opener — the car's manual has the steps, and it usually requires a working handheld remote to copy from.
6. The antenna
There is a short wire hanging from the opener — that's the antenna. If it is tucked up, broken off, or wrapped around the rail, range drops to nothing. Let it hang straight down.
7. The remote itself
Remotes are dropped, chewed, left in a hot car and washed. If the battery is new, the lock is off, it re-pairs but still doesn't work reliably, the remote is done. Replacement remotes are inexpensive; we carry LiftMaster and Genie universals on the truck.
When it's the opener, not the remote
If nothing works from the wall button either:
- No lights, no sound: check the outlet with a lamp, then the breaker. Many openers plug into a GFCI outlet that trips in humid weather.
- Lights blink, door won't close: photo-eye sensors are misaligned or blocked. See our door won't close guide.

Yes for almost every opener made after about 1997. Universal remotes from LiftMaster and Genie cover most brands; older openers with DIP switches need a matching DIP-switch remote or an external receiver.
Either the lock button on the wall console was pressed, or the opener lost its programming after a power event. Check the lock first, then re-pair. If re-pairing fails on every remote, the opener's receiver or logic board is the problem.
