Quick answerWhen a garage door won't close in cold weather, the cause is almost always one of four things: photo-eye sensors knocked out of line or fogged by condensation, old grease that has thickened in the cold, springs and metal parts that contract and make the door heavier than the opener's force setting allows, or a bottom seal frozen to the slab. Check the sensor lights and the seal first; if the door starts down and reverses, it is a force or friction problem that a tune-up fixes.
Central Arkansas doesn't get northern winters, but we get the one thing that is hardest on a garage door: swings from 60°F to the low 20s inside 48 hours, usually with an ice storm somewhere in the middle. Every January our phones light up with the same call — "it goes down a foot and comes right back up." Here's what's happening and what you can check before you call us.
The five cold-weather causes, in order of likelihood
1. Photo-eye sensors
Every opener installed since 1993 has two small sensors about six inches off the floor on each side of the door. If they can't see each other, the door refuses to close and the opener lights usually blink. Cold weather causes this three ways: condensation fogs the lens when warm garage air meets a cold door, a frost-heaved sensor bracket goes out of alignment, and people knock them with the shovel or the leaf blower they just put away. Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth and check that both LEDs are on and steady — one is usually green, the other amber. A blinking light means they are not aligned.
2. Thickened lubricant
The grease on your hinges, rollers and springs stiffens as it gets cold. On a door that was already marginal, that extra drag is enough to make the opener think it hit something, so it reverses. Old lithium grease is the worst offender; it turns to paste. A garage-door-specific silicone lubricant on the hinges, roller stems and spring coils usually clears it. Never use WD-40 as a lubricant — it is a cleaner and it strips what's left.
3. Springs and metal contraction
Steel contracts in the cold. A torsion spring that was balanced in August is slightly weaker in January, so the door is heavier at the bottom of travel. The opener's force setting was calibrated to the summer door; in winter it hits its limit and reverses. This is why cold-weather problems often show up on doors with springs near the end of their life. A tune-up rebalances the door and resets the force limits.
4. Frozen bottom seal
Meltwater runs under the door during the day and freezes overnight, gluing the rubber astragal to the concrete. The opener pulls, feels the resistance, and reverses. Do not run the opener repeatedly — that tears the seal. Pour warm (not boiling) water along the bottom edge or work it loose by hand once you've pulled the emergency release.
5. Tracks that shifted
Ice storms bring down limbs and sometimes push on the door itself. If the door binds at the same spot every time, or you can see daylight between the roller and the track, the track has moved. That's a track repair, not a lubrication issue.
What we do on a cold-weather no-close call

Preventing it next winter
- Lubricate the door every fall — hinges, rollers, springs, and the opener rail if it is a chain or screw drive.
- Replace a cracked or flattened bottom seal before it freezes to the floor.
- If the door is more than 10 years old and has never been rebalanced, schedule a tune-up before the first freeze.
- Keep the sensor area clear. Bikes, coolers and the recycling bin are the top three things we find blocking a photo-eye.

Frequently asked questions
The opener sensed resistance and reversed for safety. In cold weather the usual causes are thickened lubricant, a door that got heavier because the springs weakened, or a bottom seal frozen to the floor. If it reverses before it touches anything and the lights blink, it's the photo-eye sensors instead.
Yes — holding the wall button (not the remote) bypasses the sensors and closes the door as long as you keep pressing. It is meant as an emergency workaround, not a fix. If you need it more than once, the sensors need realignment.
We advise against it. Turning the force up makes the door close, but it also makes it push harder on anything in its path, including a person. Force should only be raised after the door is balanced and moving freely. That's part of every tune-up we do.
A silicone or lithium spray made for garage doors, applied to hinges, roller stems, springs and bearings. Avoid WD-40 as a lubricant and never lubricate the track itself — rollers should roll on a clean, dry track.
